So do UX designers really need to learn vibe coding?
Learn it if:
- You’re job hunting. Job posts increasingly list AI prototyping tools, and a working prototype in your portfolio is more persuasive than a static one.
- You work (or want to work) at a startup or small team, where owning more of the build makes you more valuable.
- You run usability tests and want realistic stimuli without engineering dependencies.
Deprioritize it if:
- You haven’t built your visual and UX fundamentals yet. A career switcher’s scarce hours are better spent on the skills that make AI output good — not on the tool that generates it. Tools churn every six months; fundamentals don’t.
- You’re expecting it to shortcut the portfolio. It won’t. Hiring managers evaluate your thinking, and AI can’t fake that for you.

You don’t need a course dedicated to vibe coding. Here’s a realistic path.
- Pick one tool. Start with a browser-based one (Bolt, Lovable, or v0) — zero setup. Graduate to Cursor or Claude Code if you want more control.
- Rebuild something you already designed. Take a portfolio project and prompt the tool to build it. You’ll immediately see where your specs were vague — that’s the lesson.
- Test it on real people. Use the working prototype in an actual usability session. This is where vibe coding earns its keep for designers.
- Stay the director. Critique the output the way an art director critiques a junior’s work. Wrong spacing? Inconsistent states? Say so, and make the AI fix it.
Budget a weekend to get functional and a month of casual practice to get fluent. That’s it. If you find you love the code side, that’s a signal worth exploring — but it’s a different career conversation.
