Student Testimonials

Real stories from people who looked at UX Design Institute and Avocademy alongside Path Unbound
I was really tempted by Avocademy because of the lower cost, but somehow I don’t really trust a program that seems a little thin on training time and portfolio — I’d rather invest in a program that does everything the right way with great word of mouth, and that’s how I came across Path Unbound. A friend of mine raved about it!
Gemma M.
Career TransitionerÂ
I’m a veteran. It’s a no brainer for me to take advantage of my VA benefits and UX Design Institute just fits the bill. I did look into Path Unbound and I was very impressed. If I wasn’t taking advantage of my GI bill, I’d definitely consider Path Unbound because the instructional team looks incredible.
Gerome A.
US Veteran Transitioning to Design
I really struggled to decide for a while because there are pros and cons to each program I looked at. I wasn’t sure what to prioritize at first but after a lot of research, I realized I want quality above everything else.I looked at the reviews of Path Unbound and it is clear they put a lot of thoughts into the curriculum. I feel confident I will be learning from the best.

FAQs
The questions people actually ask
Honest answers, including where we’re not the right fit.
I'm torn between all three. How do I actually decide?
Use the three-question framework above. Most students get clarity by answering: (1) am I a US veteran wanting VA benefits, (2) is dedicated portfolio coaching critical, and (3) what’s my real budget. Two of those three answers usually point clearly to one program.
Why is Path Unbound roughly twice as expensive as the others?
Three structural reasons: a dedicated Portfolio School module that the others don’t offer, weekly 1:1 mentorship with a consistent senior designer (rather than tutor support or crowd-sourced mentors), and visual design foundation built into the curriculum. The price reflects depth and human time. If those structural advantages aren’t priorities for your situation, Path Unbound’s premium isn’t worth paying — and we’d say so on a clarity call. UX Design Institute and Avocademy are legitimate choices for the right students.
Is UX Design Institute's accreditation actually valuable?
For specific situations, yes. The Glasgow Caledonian University partnership matters meaningfully for: VA benefit eligibility, certain government or enterprise hiring contexts, and signaling for European employers. For most US tech industry hiring, your portfolio matters far more than program accreditation. If you’re not in one of those specific situations, accreditation is a nice-to-have rather than a deciding factor.
Are job success rates comparable across all three?
Honestly, methodologies differ widely. Path Unbound publishes a 92.5% job success rate based on graduates of completed cohorts measured at time-to-employment. UX Design Institute and Avocademy publish their own numbers with their own definitions. Always ask each program for their methodology footnote and compare apples to apples.
What about combining programs to save money?
It’s a legitimate path. The build-your-own-bundle approach above (UXDI or Avocademy + Path Unbound’s standalone Portfolio School starting at $2,100) gives you a structured curriculum AND dedicated portfolio coaching at meaningful savings versus Path Unbound’s full program. Many of our Portfolio School standalone students take this path.
I'm a complete beginner with no design background. Which works for that?
All three accept beginners, but with different levels of support. Path Unbound’s curriculum builds visual design foundation from day one, which matters most for non-design backgrounds. UX Design Institute is more UX-process-focused with less emphasis on visual craft. Avocademy’s curriculum is simpler but less depth. If your background is genuinely far from design, Path Unbound’s structure is most accommodating — but the bundle approach also works.
Are these the only budget-tier options worth considering?
No — Skillcrush, Merit America, the Google UX Design Certificate (via Coursera), and Interaction Design Foundation are also legitimate options at different price points. We’ve focused this comparison on three serious career-change programs with structured cohort or tutored experiences. If your shortlist includes other programs, our individual comparison pages cover them.
Can I switch between programs?
Yes — Path Unbound works with mid-program switchers from any of the others. We review what you’ve covered so you don’t pay to repeat material. Book a clarity call and we’ll map out the path.
Still deciding? We'll give you a straight answer.
We’ll honestly tell you whether Path Unbound, UX Design Institute, or Avocademy is the right fit — most clarity calls end with a clearer plan, not necessarily a Path Unbound enrollment.
